Dirt Track Auto Racing - Are You a Fan?
I remember the day when my son asked me to watch a dirt bike race on TV. I watched but didn't think too much of it. It looked dangerous and challenging. Little did I know that was just the prelude to the real thing. Within a month, I was sitting in the stands like all of the other parents watching my son in action during his first dirt track race. I have to tell you, it was absolutely thrilling to see kids of all ages testing out that track. It was completely different in person than it was on TV.
If you have watched dirt track auto racing on TV, I'm sure you know it can be exciting. I have to tell you though, if you don't find a local track and see it first hand, you are really missing something great. Dirt track auto racing in person is completely different. Sure, you have to pay a nominal fee to get in of about $10 (unless you want to be in the pits where it will cost you more.) You will want to bring the following for comfort sake: ear plugs (just kidding), eye glasses (to keep the dirt from flying into your eyes), maybe a cushion to sit on, a camera, and the rest of the family for fun. If you get hungry, they usually have a concession stand with your favorite junk food just waiting to warm your stomach. You will need a drink or two to wash down the dust and dirt as it flies from the track. Here's a pic of a few of Jeremy's dirt track auto racing fans.
Once you are seated, the dirt track auto racing fun begins. The announcer asks everyone to stand for the prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. As soon as that is over, you hear the engines revving up as they approach the dirt track. There are usually five classes that run in a dirt track race and you never know what order they are going to race in. That is determined each week by each different track. This day there were the four cylinders (cars that race around the dirt track at about 40-50 mph). The next class was the Charger Class and these cars go about 60-70 mph. The third class are the Street Stocks which go up to speeds of 70-80 mph. The fourth class are the E-Mods that go about 80-90 mph. The fifth class are the Late Models that can go up to 100+ mph depending on the track.
Personally, I don't care much for eating the dirt that flies from the track so I hide behind a blanket when the late models roar around the track. I try to sit in the middle, about half way up the bleachers or higher, but still, that dirt flies! The sound is deafening and it actually hurts your ears at times. But it's great anyway. It's exciting! It's fun. You have to be there to experience it! True dirt track auto racing in action.
My favorites are the four cylinders (they seem a bit safer) and the Chargers. The E-Mods are fun to watch too. They are strange looking cars. Each class has it's own charm and makes for a great night of dirt track auto racing entertainment. So don't delay. Support your favorite dirt track auto racer the next time s/he races and enjoy your family night out at the dirt track.
